The artist Susan Philipsz uses Polem silos
Sometimes Polem silos serve a purpose other than the storage of goods.
For example, we were asked if we could supply silos for an art project in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. The silos suspended from the ridge of the church building are open at the bottom and serve as an additional resonating body for playing sound fragments.
The project is explained on the website of the monumental church building:
After numerous visits to the church and extensive artistic research, Scottish artist Susan Philipsz presents her context-specific sound installation “The Fall” in the city's oldest building.
Philipsz is sometimes referred to as a sound architect. As a starting point for her installations, she often takes existing music (pieces) that are linked to the history and stories of a place. With her own arrangements, Philipsz explores the emotional and spatial dimension of sound. Using sound recordings, mainly of her own voice, she creates immersive environments that heighten the listener's awareness.
The art installation can be seen in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam until the end of March 2022.
