Louw Yntema and the new constructions project

You are here: Home

Louw Yntema, chief of the department of steal and agricultural products, is someone who finds it a challenge to make an advantage of something that at first seems to be a disadvantage. Yntema is one of the hardworking people of Polem and because of that a member of the special projectteam that was started because of the new constructions project after the huge fire of February 2011.

Yntema is responsible for the carpark, machines, the buildings and the terrain of Polem, the Dutch manufacturer of Glassfibre Reïnforced Polyester (GRP) silos and tanks from the city of Lemmer. That’s also why he’s a member – from A to Z – of the special new constructions projectteam. “It’s a nice challenge for me, also because I learn a lot of everything we have to think about in such a project. I like challenges.”

‘I’m at my best when there’s pressure’
His working days are at the moment a little bit busier than usual, because of the combination between the new constructions and the normal daily working routine in the company that works 24/7 with 140 employees in three shifts. “That my job became a bit more busy then before is all part of the job. I’m at my best when there’s pressure, I like that.”

The chief of the department of steal and agricultural products has a responsible job, he can be reached 24/7 each day in case of possible failures in the production. He likes to work and he likes challenges. He started in 1981 as a welder in the company that then was called Silobouw. After some mergers Silobouw changed into Polem and Yntema worked himself up into the management.

“If I can’t develop myself I get sleepy. I don’t want to do every day the same routine the rest of my life. I prefer everything that has to do with technique, that’s my main interest.” The Polem-fire in February 2011 was ofcourse a big disaster. The ‘good thing’ was that at Polem the people with character stood up. “We solved all the problems that came because we had – I mean have – a good team with good people. On such moments you need men who can put their strength in it.”

‘Power of Polem is that we can switch fast’
That the people of Polem have some strength, is obvious. “We are a bunch of enthusiastic persons. When we see possibilities we don’t talk for months but act pretty fast. Maybe that’s the power of Polem, that we can switch fast. Maybe that’s why we are so important in the European market for glassfibre reïnforced polyester tanks and silos.”

Yntema brings up an example of fast thinking and working, with quality. He mentions the manufacturing of diodes, for windmillparks and drill platforms in see. “Diodes are polyester tubes that are placed around the pillars so that salt seawater cannot damage the steel construction. Someone came to us and asked if we could make diodes. We thought about the pros and cons and shortly after that we started manufacturing these polyester tubes.”

As soon as the new construction project of Polem is ready at the end of February 2012, it will not mean that Louw Yntema his job will become boring. “With the two new and bigger production halls there will be enough challenges to keep me happy. The production-possibilities are growing, I’m looking forward to it already.”
