Emsland Flour Mills in Spelle, Germany is part of a successful privately owned milling company. With a history of over a century this milling company nowadays shows very healthy growth in Germany and Central Europe. Emsland Flour Mills produces its own leading brands like Maxiback.

The Challenge
|
Additional silos on an existing concrete sub-structure
To meet increasing demands the storage capacity at the mill in Spelle needed to be expanded. At the time the concrete sub-structure was build, it was designed with spare space for a future extension. The projects main challenges were:
· Realise as much storage capacity as possible on the available spare space on the sub-structure.
· Design and anchor the new silos to resist the wind loads at a height of up to 36 m.
· The new silos are placed outdoors. Condensation must be prevented to maintain the high quality of the Emsland flours.

The Solution
|
Installation of five GRP Flour silos
On the existing sub-structure 5 round silos with diameter Ø 2.800 mm fitted exactly. With a cylindrical length of 22 m a storage capacity of 5 x 140 m3 was achieved.
The silos have a steel ring at the base for anchoring on the concrete sub structure.
The silos are made of Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP). GRP has, when compared with metals, a much lower heat transmission. This substantially reduces condensation in the silo.

The Design
|
Condensation protected silos with 22 m cylindrical length
The wind loads on these high silos proved to be three times higher than usual. The civil engineers and the Polem engineers were highly challenged to realise a strong enough silo anchoring. The lower silo section and the steel anchor ring were especially designed for the extreme high loads. The very long silo cylinders were manufactured in one part for optimal strength.
To prevent any possible condensation the silo top is insulated with PU-foam and dehumidified air is fed into the top of the silo.

The Result
|
Maximum capacity food grade flour storage
Emsland Flour Mills has Polem GRP-silos with maximum storage capacity and a design to withstand the silo loads and maximum wind loads. Thanks to the self-insulating silo material, additional silo top insulation and dehumidified air blanketing the highest storage quality is guaranteed for the Emsland flour.
