For GRP a life span of at least 25 years is to be expected, under normal operating conditions. Practical experience shows even for considerably longer service life. Other than in tanks and silos GRP material has proven its durability in heavily loaded product such as windmill blades, competition yachts, gas bottles and mine hunters. Polem GRP tanks and silos are finished with a coloured or semi-transparent top-coat. This topcoat is doubly stabilized against UV rays for optimal weather resistance.
A GRP silo is on the inside furnished with a gel-coat layer. This gel-coat layer is a resin-only layer and is an indissolubly part of the silo wall which is not to be compared with for example layers of paint or coating.
The gel-coat is followed by reinforcement layers that contain glass fibres to provide the required strength.
Finally the top-coat is applied before the reinforcement layers have hardened completely, this is called a wet-in-wet method. Again this is not to be compared with for example a coating applied afterwards to a steel silo.
As mentioned before, a life span of 30 years for a GRP silo or tank under normal operating conditions is not exceptional.
